By: Daren Copely College Press Staff Writer Super Tuesday has come and gone and one candidate for the Republican Party has been shot to the front of the line, Arizona Senator John McCain. The most unlikely candidate, the one many counted out of the race as bankrupt and losing steam, is now the front runner for the Republican nomination in 2008. With McCain’s newly achieved position, many conservatives are worried that this once down-and-out candidate could be the next president. On Fox News’s Hannity & Colmes, Conservative author and pundit Ann Coulter, who supports Former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney, spoke about her feelings on McCain’s delegate lead. “John McCain is bad for this country and if he wins the nomination I will campaign for Hillary Clinton,” said Coulter. Coulter, who has written very negative things about Democrats, has stirred the political pot with her recent comments on a possible HIllary vote come November. Coulter is not the only conservative who has been speaking out about the possibility of McCain on the Republican ticket in 2008. “He snaps in anger at people in his own campaign.” said Rev. Pat Robertson when interviewed about how McCain treats his campaign staff. “He’s like two people.” Dr. James Dobson, chairman of the board of Focus on The Family, a nonprofit organization, also added his thoughts to the campaign prior to Super Tuesday. “I would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances.” Many conservatives speak of how McCain and his voting record and history of ‘Liberal’ collaborations involving torture, illegal immigration and campaign finance will alienate those votes. With the sudden campaign suspension of Mitt Romney, McCain will be the likely nominee for the Republican Party. Romney bowed out of the race today saying he will step aside to assure that there is a Republican victory. “If this was about me, I would stay,” said Romney. “This is for the good of the party” With McCain inevitably taking the reigns of the Republican Party, talk of Romney’s perhaps being McCain’s Vice-Presidential running mate have circled the beltway. With the Republican race narrowing to a certain nominee, voters have been very vocal on their feelings about the unexpected surge of McCain. “I pretty much believe him as lesser of 3 evils, I never saw him as a Republican,” said Political blogger and radio show host Heather Bachman. “I believe that John McCain could be the one to get the USA out of this recession we are in,” said Political Blogger and undecided voter David Spears. McCain refuses to acknowledge his inevitable nomination saying there are still a lot of votes to be counted in this race. |
