The much overused expression describing the results of the 2008 New Hampshire Primaries is definitely “Comeback”. New York Senator Hillary Clinton appeared to be in a state of despair after coming in second to Illinois Senator Barack Obama in the Iowa Democratic Primary. The media scrutinized a moment in New Hampshire where she was clearly near tears, whether that hurt or help is yet to be seen. According to FOX News, former Bill Clinton adviser and current FOX News contributor Dick Morris said, “She pretended to cry, the women felt sorry for her and they went for her.” Obama was still a factor in New Hampshire; Clinton’s win was not as decisive as his in Iowa. Numbers show Clinton with 39 percent of the vote, Obama with 36. Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards, who came in second in Iowa, trailed behind the leaders with 17 percent. McCain’s win in New Hampshire continues to keep the Republicans in a hugely open race. With losses in Iowa and New Hampshire, many in the media are already counting out former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who had previously led in both states. What many fail to notice is that with his win in the Wyoming primary, Romney is leading the delegate count among Republicans in most polls. FOX News has him second to former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee by two delegates. Next on the agenda is Michigan. Both Clinton and Obama have roots in neighboring state Illinois, while Romney was born in Michigan and his father is a former Governor. The Michigan primaries are scheduled for January 15th. |
