By: Paul Lim College Press Staff Writer Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney wins his second primary in the hopes of winning the Republican nomination for the 2008 Presidential Election. The Michigan native found himself in a tight race against Arizona Senator, along with New Hampshire primary winner, John McCain. It appears Romney had the right idea when he said, “I think Michigan is going to vote for a Romney again. I’m planning on it.” While Romney and McCain are running a close first and second, former Arkansas Governor and Iowa primary winner Mike Huckabee picked up third place, with the rest of the pack pulling in minimal numbers. In New Hampshire, Independents turned out to be the important bracket of voters, most of which support McCain, and they also did in Michigan. In this case, the economy was key to a state whose unemployment rate is greater than that of the entire country. Those voters significantly sided with Romney. Another throwback to New Hampshire was the ever noted buzz-word of “comeback”. “Tonight marks the beginning of a comeback, a comeback for America,” Romney said of his victory. He also repeated what has become a mantra in his campaign, “Washington is broken and we're going to do something about it.” Many in the media said if Romney were not able to pull out a win in Michigan, it would mark the end of his campaign. Huckabee did not appear to take the news of his third place finish well saying, “It’s not like I can go around and throw my dad’s name out and make that open a door.” The Democrats pulled out their delegation due to scheduling conflicts with the Democratic National Committee. New York Senator Hillary Clinton was the lone viable candidate on the ballot. The Republicans head out to South Carolina where Huckabee and former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson are in a heated battle. |
