John Granville, a Foreign Service diplomat from New York was killed, along with his driver, as they were returning from a New Year’s party.
The 33-year-old had been shot in the hand, stomach and shoulder. According to CNN, Granville’s sister, Katie McCabe, claims that the Sudanese hospital workers neglected some of his wounds, leading to his death. Granville died several hours after the incident occurred.
Sudanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ali As Sadeq labels the shooting incident as a “street argument.” He claims that it was a result of a confrontation amidst the traffic of party goers returning home that had tragically escalated.
U.S. and Sudanese officials are trying to figure out if this attack is an isolated incident or part of a larger situation.
