GENERAL:
Q: Why do you charge a membership fee?
A: We currently charge a very low price for membership to our site. We take these funds and put them back into our company. There are many tools we use in order to keep our site running for our students, these fees help pay for them. (Come on, its cheaper than taco bell!)
Q: I forgot my password, now what?
A: If you forgot you password, go to the log in panel where you would usually enter your log in information and click on "lost password."
Q: What type of accounts can I have on The College Press?
A: There are 3 types of accounts you can have while working with The College Press. These accounts are Media Student, Professional and Professor.
Q: How do each of the 3 accounts on this website work?
A: Media Student: This account is for those who want to build their portfolio, network with students and publish their work for the world to see. These are our student accounts.
Professor: This account is for our professor friends who would like to be involved in their students journalism progress on The College Press. We assign these accounts to university professors only.
Professional: These accounts are for those in the business who would like to be involved in our company by posting job listings, upcoming events and announcements for journalism students. These are non-student accounts.
Q: What is the purpose of The College Press?
A: Our company is a preparatory website that presents a unique opportunity to journalism students who want to become publish, build their portfolio and network with others in the business. We provide an environment for students to network with others, to search jobs, talk to professors, peer edit colleague work and become published on our front page newspaper.
Q: I see 2 tabs on the top right of The College Press, what are those?
A: The College Press is made up of two main parts, NEWS and NETWORK. NEWS is where we publish student work as a working newspaper. Our reading public comes to our front page to catch the latest information on the world. NETWORK is our student news network where students, professors and professionals come together in efforts to help each-other progress in the media biz!
Q: How do I publish my work?
A: Once you are a member, you are a bonefide publishing media student! You can take your ideas, filter them through our member peer editing room (or THE SLOT) and then send your piece to our staff for international publication of your article(s). To do this, click on 'Peer editing exchange' on the top of your profile account. Once there you will be presented with various options. In this case, to publish click on 'Submit to exchange'. There you can choose the media you wish to submit to be peer edited. Once you are satisfied with others and their advice on your work, click 'Publish' to send your work to us for publication on our front page.
Q: Who sees my work?
A: The College Press is an international publication. Our pages are seen by the entire world. We are currently connected with every journalism school in America exposing your work to thousands and thousands of students, professionals and professors who want to help you be the best in the biz!
Q: Is College Press a political website? Do you lean a certain way?
A: No. Our website certainly allows political discourse but we as a company do not claim a particular political view. We allow all view points to be involved on our pages.
Q: Can I join if I am not a college student?
A: No. For now our site is only for those in the area of journalism college study. We may open our pages to outside freelancing soon, but for now it is exclusive to college students.
Q: How do I meet people in your social news network?
A: Once you are logged in, you can click the 'search' option in your profile to search our network for your fellow colleagues. If you find someone you know or maybe someone you would like to work with while on our site, click on their profile and choose 'add as colleague' from the menu next to their picture. You must wait for them to accept your request in order to be added as a colleague.
Q: How do I start my own column?
A: Anyone who chooses to become published with us can see their articles in print, on our front page. But, we offer a special area on the site where you can create your own weekly/monthly column. With this feature you can create your own column, custom logo (you must send) and gain a loyal fan base. Pretty cool! All you need to do is contact our staff and let us know you want a column, what name you want for it (ie: Daren's Car Advice) and send us a logo. That's it!
Q: What is the best way to contact your staff if I need help?
A: The best way to contact our staff is the 'contact' link on the top of the website. We have staff waiting to help you.
Q: How do I export my portfolio items from The College Press once I am ready to graduate?
A: Once you are ready to use the items you have been gathering in your portfolio, simply open the file(s) and print. We have set up a simple system for your files to be exported. If you have read this and still have trouble, please contact our staff and we will help you.
